For a while now, I’ve been struggling with what can only be described as the bane of middle age: presbyopia. 😩👓
For a while now, I’ve been struggling with what can only be described as the bane of middle age: presbyopia. Reading menus, texting, or just glancing at my computer screen had become an exercise in holding things at arm's length or constantly switching between my distance glasses and a pair of drugstore readers. The endless swapping was not just annoying, it was genuinely affecting my daily efficiency and causing a persistent, low-grade headache. I knew I needed a dedicated solution, something that offered a seamless transition for different focal lengths. The idea of progressive lenses, especially with a clear top for distance, became a constant thought, a glimmer of hope for my tired eyes. Many people understand this frustration, that constant battle to find the sweet spot for clear vision. My search quickly led me to explore online options for what I hoped would be my vision savior: the SHINU Progressive Readers.
My journey to purchase involved a fair bit of online browsing, comparing prices and features across various sites. Cinily Eyewear caught my eye with its range and competitive pricing. I meticulously entered my prescription, paid for what I thought was expedited shipping, and then settled in for the wait. The anticipation was palpable, a mix of excitement for clearer vision and a slight undercurrent of anxiety given some of the things I’d read. I remembered one reviewer, Denise LeFrancois, stating quite emphatically, "Don't bother paying for the faster shipping because you still will have to wait a few weeks to get your glasses. So save yourself that money as it will only get your glasses to you in about 2 days sooner. Not worth that money." This comment played on my mind, making me wonder if my investment in speed was truly worthwhile. Her strong opinion that "The customer service is the among the worst I have ever experienced" also gave me pause, making me hope I wouldn't need to interact with them for any issues. The order confirmation email arrived, setting my expectations for delivery sometime in early 2025, which, even with "express" shipping, felt like a long time to wait for something so essential.
When the package finally arrived in late 2024, my heart skipped a beat. Unboxing is always a moment of truth, isn't it? The packaging itself was simple but secure, protecting the glasses well. As I pulled out the frames, I was immediately impressed. The build felt solid, the material substantial, and the design quite sleek – much better than I had anticipated for the price. The lenses, clear and seemingly well-fitted, looked promising. It made me think of Denise’s positive remark: "I didn't really expect too much quality in the actual glasses but I was proven wrong! I am happy to report that they sell quality frames and the lenses are superior to what I have gotten at Lens Crafters! And that is saying a lot!" Her sentiment perfectly echoed my initial impression; these didn't feel like a compromise. I had also opted for the water and fingerprint protection coating, a decision I hoped would pay off in daily use.
Putting on my new SHINU Progressive Readers for the first time was revelatory. The transition from distance to reading vision was surprisingly smooth, much more so than I'd dared to hope. Tasks like reading my laptop screen while simultaneously glancing up at a presentation felt effortless. The clarity across the different zones was excellent, and the anti-smudge coating I chose, much like Denise noted, "has proven to be a wise choice!" keeping the lenses remarkably clean even with daily handling. However, I did notice a small caveat. The reading portion of the lens felt a tiny bit lower than what I was used to from previous experiences with progressive lenses, requiring a slight adjustment in how I held my head. This resonated with Denise’s observation about bifocals, which applies to progressives as well: "The height of the bifocal is a tad low for me, so still getting used to that. So, if you do order a bifocal, have your eye doctor give the correct height that you can pass on to Cinily Eyewear…..they have a standard height which is NOT for everyone." It’s a minor adjustment, but worth noting for future orders.
My main frustration, much like many other customers, lay with the customer service experience. Trying to get an update on my shipping, or even just asking a clarifying question, proved to be an uphill battle. Email responses were slow, and reaching a live person through chat or phone seemed nearly impossible. Denise's exasperated comments hit home: "Don't expect to hear from anyone if you reach out by email. Don't expect to really get help with the \"chat\", even though you will be transferred to \"live agent\", or so they say. I am not sold on that as truth." This lack of accessibility is certainly a significant drawback. On a positive note, regarding returns, I was pleased to find that the policy is quite reasonable. Denise clarified this well: "I also read in other review that they only accept ONE glass for return. THIS IS NOT TRUE. I have sent back 3 pairs so far and may not be done until I find the perfect pair for my face. THEY DO REFUND YOUR MONEY ON ALL GLASSES SENT IN FOR RETURN! Just be reasonable and return them within 14 days." This reassured me that Cinily Eyewear stands by their product, even if communicating with them about it proves challenging.
Overall, my experience with the SHINU Progressive Readers from Cinily Eyewear is a mixed bag, but ultimately a positive one. The product itself — the quality of the frames and the optical clarity of the progressive lenses — far exceeded my expectations for the price. It has genuinely improved my daily life by eliminating the constant lens-swapping hassle. However, the purchasing journey, particularly the shipping time and the abysmal customer service, was a source of considerable frustration. It's a shame because the product itself is excellent, a sentiment echoed by Denise who lamented, "I would have given them a 5 star but the worst ever customer service brings it down to a 3 star. What a shame." My recommendation? If you're looking for high-quality, affordable progressive lenses and are willing to tolerate slow shipping and non-existent customer support, then these glasses are absolutely worth it. Just make sure you know your precise measurements, especially bifocal height, and hope you don't need to contact support!
